How to cancel a casino withdrawal in the UK
You can't. The UK Gambling Commission banned reverse withdrawals at every UK-licensed casino, and the rule has applied since 31 October 2021. Once you tap Withdraw, the money is on its way to your bank - a few hours on e-wallets and Faster Payments, up to five working days on debit-card returns.
Why the ban exists
Reverse withdrawal was the feature that let you undo a payout while it was still pending and drop the money back into your balance - from where you'd usually gamble it. The UKGC found it was a serious source of harm: players who had made a rational decision to stop were being tempted to reverse it when the withdrawal review took longer than expected.
It first told operators to switch the feature off in May 2020, in its extra customer-interaction guidance, and then made the ban a formal requirement for every remote licensee from 31 October 2021.
What to do if you regret the withdrawal
Nothing - let it land. Once the money is in your bank account, decide there. Three things worth doing at that point:
- Move the money. Push it into a savings pot or a separate account you don't use for gambling. Monzo, Starling, Chase and Revolut all let you set this up in about 30 seconds; a manual transfer to a spouse's or family member's account also works.
- Don't re-deposit that day. If the urge to redeposit the money is loud, that is the signal to enable a bank-level gambling block before the urge wins. See the tools section below.
- Set a lower deposit limit in the casino's account settings before your next deposit. UKGC rules require the reduction to take effect immediately and the reversal to sit under a 24-hour cooling-off.
What "pending" actually means
Pending is not you waiting for the payment network - it's the operator reviewing the payout before it hits the network. They're checking KYC status, any unfinished bonus wagering, and whether the pattern of play trips their fraud rules. That review is what the ban stops you interrupting.
Typical review times at UKGC-licensed operators:
- E-wallet (PayPal, Skrill): usually processed within a few hours, in bank within the same day.
- Debit card (Visa/Mastercard OCT): reviewed same-day, funds visible in 1-3 working days.
- Bank transfer (Faster Payments): reviewed same-day, funds within hours once released.
If your withdrawal has been pending for more than 5 working days with no explanation, that's a different problem: raise a formal complaint with the operator and, if that fails, with its ADR provider. Offshore sites set their own review times; our UK casino reviews quote each operator's stated limits, and our crypto casino guide explains how blockchain payouts settle.
If you asked to cancel and support said no
They're correct. UK support agents are not permitted to reverse a withdrawal for you either - the ban applies to their side of the interface as well. If an agent offered to reverse it, that would be a breach of their licence and worth reporting to the UKGC.
Tools that stop this happening again
If cancelling withdrawals is a habit, the pattern needs a harder brake than a soft deposit limit. In order of how much friction each one adds:
- Casino deposit limit. Immediate on tightening, 24-hour cooling-off on loosening. Set it at whatever the last month of losses says you can afford.
- Bank-level gambling block. Free, and every major UK bank now offers it: Monzo, Starling, Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds, NatWest, TSB, Nationwide, Santander, Chase, Revolut and Halifax. Toggle it in-app; usually a 48-72 hour cooling-off to switch off. It blocks anything the merchant category code 7995 covers - every UK-licensed casino, plus most offshore ones.
- Gamban. A £2/month app-level block for phones and computers. Complements the bank block by stopping the browser from even loading the sites.
- GamStop. The nuclear option: a UKGC-mandated register that blocks all UK-licensed operators from letting you play, for 6 months, 1 year or 5 years. Not reversible during the term. Free.
Ready-to-send message if you need it
If you want to ask support to close your account (not just cancel the withdrawal), send this. It commits nothing you can't undo, and it asks the operator in writing to return your balance.
Please close my account with immediate effect. I do not wish to reverse the pending withdrawal on my account - please continue processing that as normal.
Please return my remaining balance without unreasonable delay to the same payment method I deposited with, subject to standard AML checks.
Please confirm receipt and the timescale for balance return.
Thank you.
